There are very different rules for choosing a domain name in the australian domain realm and that of the world domain realm.
In Australia (.com.au or .net.au or .org.au domains), there are specific rules to the domain names that are allowed to be registered. You can only register a domain name that is related to your business name (either exactly the same, an acronym of your business name or has some relation to your business).
In the world realm (.com or .net or .org domains), there are no rules to the domains you can register - if you can obtain the domain you want, you can buy it - simple. If the domain is not available, you can wait until it is up for renewal and then try to purchase it, or try to negotiate with the owner to buy it before-hand. There are a lot of savvy internet people who have bought up domain names they deem could be popular or highly prized and then sell them to the highest bidder. They don't actually do anything with these sites, there is no content on the sites, they are just added to the buyers domain stable of sites, which they are hoping to sell at a profit.
General information about domain names:
- domain names can be any length up to 67 characters (this includes any "-" or "_" characters or numbers in the domain name
- hyphenated domain names can be easily forgotten and harder to type - shorter domain names are easier to remember
- search engines love hyphenated domain names that display exactly what the web page is displaying
- it may be a good idea to register several similar domain names to your main domain
- for the world realm, a .com or .net domain name (for a business) or .org (for a non-commercial organisation) s recommended
